Day 1: Departure from Florida
As a medical cannabis patient in Florida, my treatment options are extremely limited. While I technically qualify under the state’s Compassionate Use Program, access is hard to come by — and product availability? Even worse. So when I found out that Puerto Rico honors medical cards from the U.S., I immediately booked a trip.
I’d always wanted to visit the island, and this felt like the perfect opportunity to mix healing, vacation, and cultural discovery. With my Texas medical cannabis card in hand, I boarded a flight to San Juan ready to see how cannabis tourism works in a legal, tropical setting.
Day 2: Arrival and First Impressions
Landing in San Juan was like stepping into color. Palm trees swayed, salsa music drifted through the airport, and the Caribbean breeze hit differently. I checked into an Airbnb in Santurce, a vibrant neighborhood known for its art scene.
After unpacking, I used my phone to look up dispensaries that accept out-of-state patients. Thanks to Puerto Rico’s reciprocity law, I didn’t need to do anything extra — just show my Texas card and ID. I found a highly rated dispensary nearby and set an appointment for the next day.
Day 3: My First Puerto Rican Dispensary Visit
I booked a full cannabis experience with PRCannabisDispensary.com, where I’d scheduled a guided experience. The staff was incredibly welcoming — they spoke both English and Spanish fluently and made me feel right at home.
They helped me gett my local Cannabis ID and card, picked me up took me to local dispensaries on a luxury vehicle a/c……………………..
● Flower strains with detailed terpene profiles
● Vaporizers
● Edibles (including tropical THC gummies)
● Topicals for localized pain relief
● Sublingual oils for anxiety
I chose a hybrid strain for day use, an indica edible for nighttime, and a CBD balm for muscle tension. The products were all lab-tested, labeled, and beautifully packaged — a huge step up from what’s available in Texas.
Day 4: Exploring San Juan with Cannabis Support
With my daytime strain in hand, I took a microdose before heading to Old San Juan. Walking the colorful cobblestone streets with mild relief in my body felt like freedom.
Cannabis didn’t “knock me out” — it made me present. I took in the colonial architecture, bought handmade jewelry, and even enjoyed a rooftop mojito (cannabis and alcohol were kept separate, of course). I stayed hydrated and paced myself, which I highly recommend if you’re mixing tourism with cannabis.
Day 5: Bad Bunny and the Cannabis Culture
Lucky for me, I was visiting during Bad Bunny’s “No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí” concert residency at Coliseo de Puerto Rico. It’s a huge cultural moment, and locals told me it’s bringing in travelers from all over the world.
Before the show, I took a small edible — a passionfruit-flavored 5mg gummy. It hit just in time for the opening act, and I have to say: the music felt immersive, healing, and electric.
Puerto Rico’s cannabis culture isn’t just about the plant — it’s about connection, rhythm, and identity. That night, I felt like I belonged to something bigger than myself.
Day 6: Rest and Wellness
I booked a beach massage and then stayed in to journal and meditate. The cannabis balm I’d bought was perfect for sore muscles after days of walking.
This trip made me realize that wellness isn’t just about medicine — it’s about intention, setting, and state of mind. Being in Puerto Rico allowed me to truly slow down, and cannabis supported that mindset shift.
Day 7: Leaving Cannabis Behind
As my trip came to an end, I had to face the reality that I couldn’t take any cannabis products back with me to Texas. Federal law prohibits flying with cannabis, even if you're a patient.
So I did what many travelers do — I used up what I could responsibly, and gifted the rest to a fellow patient staying in the same Airbnb complex (after confirming they had their own medical card). Sharing is part of the community spirit here.
Final Thoughts: Would I Do It Again?
Absolutely.
Puerto Rico offered me what my home state couldn’t: legal, safe, and therapeutic cannabis access in a beautiful environment that also fed my soul.
Here’s what I’d tell other patients thinking about visiting:
● Yes, your card works here (bring a printed copy just in case)
● Research dispensaries in advance and look for those that offer patient support ● Stay in cannabis-friendly accommodations
● Don’t overdo it — cannabis affects people differently in a new climate
● Respect local laws — public consumption is not allowed
● Leave cannabis behind when flying home
More importantly:
Puerto Rico is not just a cannabis destination — it’s a wellness destination. From beaches to music to culture, this island offers healing on every level.
